Opportunities, Inc. was filled with color and creativity the last week of February as participants in the Adult Day Services Connections Program exhibited their artwork at the 2nd Annual Connections Art Gallery.
Over 60 participants each entered an art display that expressed themselves through painting, drawing, mixed media and more. Each piece highlighted individual artists’ talents and interests in areas such as nature, abstract, landmarks and hobbies. On February 25th, over 90 people attended the art show open house from 9:00am-11:00am. Family, community members, care managers and volunteers were greeted by participants and invited to enjoy the show with the artists. “There is such an amazing pool of talent at Opportunities…and such a wide variety of projects and colors,” shared volunteer Carol Sapienza. “There was so much to see. It was spectacular!”
The first 50 guests received a complimentary crocheted scrunchie made by Vencel, a participant who attends the day services program and the inspiration behind the art gallery. Of the artists, Vencel said, “The happiness on their faces reflected the happiness in their artwork. The artwork came from the hearts and minds of all us artists.”
New this year was the opportunity for guests to vote on the “Best of” in five categories. Winners included:
Most Creative: All participants
Best 3-D Artwork: “Bird Catchers’ Secrets” by Denise and “Back to Nature” by Deb
Best Use of Color: “Crocheted Purse” by Vencel and “Rainbow Swirl” by Tori
Best Drawing/Illustration: “Japanese Kanji” by Devin and “The Big Star” by Terri
Best Mixed Media: “Randy Rhoades Tribute” by Darrell and “Cup of Java” by Ed
Overall Best: “Big Ben and the Green Streets” by Martin
Mel Jaeggi, manager of adult day services, was thrilled with the participants’ engagement and community support. “Every participant was offered the opportunity to develop and expand their confidence by creating their own unique artwork,” shared Jaeggi. “The results were nothing short of amazing. At the open house, it was great to see their faces light up from the positive comments they received from the community members.”
“It was phenomenal to see such creative art projects made by such wonderful artists,” said volunteer Joe Sapienza.
