Opportunities, Inc., a leading nonprofit dedicated to empowering individuals with diverse abilities, recently hosted a special Mission Services experience for its Board of Directors. The event highlighted the wide range of services provided by the organization, including PreVocational training, Adult Day Services, Birth to 3 programming, and Guardianship services, while showcasing the powerful impact these programs have on participants and their families.
A central theme of the experience was to bring “The Voice of the People to the Board,” underscoring the organization’s commitment to ensuring that the individuals it serves have a direct platform to share their experiences, dreams, and challenges with leadership.
To bring this message to life, participants from the Adult Day Services program teamed up with board members for an energetic game of Wheel of Fortune, using LifeLoop technology to engage and collaborate in real time. This fun and interactive activity broke down barriers, fostering genuine connection and mutual understanding.
Participants and board members also worked side-by-side to complete activities reflecting the skills taught through PreVocational training. These demonstrations allowed board members to experience firsthand how program participants are preparing for meaningful employment and greater independence.
“Our mission is most meaningful when the voices of those we serve guide our decisions,” said Barb LeDuc, Present/CEO. “Today was about listening and learning from participants in a way that was both joyful and deeply impactful.”
The experience also featured a hands-on butterfly exhibit, where participants shared their experiences of witnessing caterpillars transform into chrysalises and emerge as butterflies – one butterfly even emerged during the meeting. The exhibit served as a powerful metaphor for the growth and transformation that individuals experience through the nonprofit’s programs.
Board members were deeply moved by the personal stories and creative expressions shared throughout the meeting. Many reflected on how these experiences reaffirmed their commitment to supporting services that foster independence, skill-building, and community inclusion for individuals with diverse abilities.
As Opportunities, Inc. continues its mission to create hope, growth, and opportunities, events like this reinforce the importance of collaboration between participants, families, staff, and leadership.
