Connections Art Gallery

In January, Opportunities, Inc.’s Adult Day Services, Connections Program created a sensational experience through art! It engaged all participants to create an inspiring and personal piece of art that invoked the senses, though touch, feel, sight, sound, or smell. Vincent, a participant who attends the day service, was the inspiration behind the galley, as he believes himself to be a creative being and believes in the power of art to connect people of all abilities. When asked what motivated him to host an art show, he said he “loved doing art with other people and helping the community.”

There were more than 20 displays that captured the essence of the five senses in a truly imaginative way.   There were cookies and fresh lavender for smelling, a host of different textures for touching, visual tapestries for viewing, and lovely Evie, another participant, serenading the guests strolled through the gallery.

Fifty stakeholders attended, including care managers, family members and providers. Guests were able to walk through and see all the displays. Participants were so proud to show off their work, and guests were equally excited to be able to have a chance to see how the Connections program enriches everyone’s lives.

Melissa Jaeggi, Adult Day Services Manager, found the event to be a huge success. She said that there was 100% participation and “While the art was certainly aesthetically pleasing, it ended up being so much more. The Direct Support Professionals facilitated choice-making and self-expression. The art was something tangible that the participants enjoyed sharing with those that attended the show. The participants are so excited to do the show again that many have already shared with me ideas for the next show”.

Opportunities, Inc. events that bring together our communities and showcase participant skills and choices are critical to our service delivery. For more information on the choices that are offered, please contact Melissa Jaeggi, manager of Adult Day Services.
